Wright-stained peripheral blood smear demonstrating eccentrocytes (cells with eccentric hemoglobin puddling), stomatocytes, and reticulocytes. This morphology is typical of hereditary xerocytosis, an inherited disorder of erythrocyte dehydration. Mutations in the FAM38A gene, which encodes the membrane-associated mechanotransduction protein, PIEZO1, have been identified in patients with hereditary xerocytosis.
