Red blood cell (RBC) adhesion to the mouse carotid artery endothelial surface following initiation of thrombosis with ferric chloride (scanning electron microscopy). The smooth-appearing spherical structures are RBC fragments, and the rough-appearing material observed throughout also is derived from RBCs. Numerous platelets are visible, but are observed to be adherent to the RBC-derived structures rather than to the endothelial surface itself. See the article by Barr et al on page 3733.
