The image shows a high endothelial venule (HEV) in a lymph node section from a ubiquitin-GFP chimeric mouse (green) stained for ICAM-1 (red) and sytox 63/nuclei (blue). Green radio-resistant endothelial HEV cells create pockets in which blood-circulating lymphocytes accumulate before accessing the parenchyma. In addition to being passive entry doors for lymphocytes, HEVs are traffic control checkpoints able to create “waiting areas” in which lymphocytes accumulate and are held until space is made available to them in the parenchyma as a consequence of lymphocytes egress.
