The cover image illustrates the enhanced phosphorylation of Akt1 (in green fluorescence) in purified CLL cells upon incubation with primary human bone marrow stromal cells demonstrated by fibronectin staining (in red). This marrow microenvironment model provides direct evidence that CLL cells adhere to and migrate through the marrow stromal cells and their matrix products and consequently acquire antiapoptotic and proliferation signals through the activation of the PI3-K/Akt pathway.
