Early postnatal mouse retina develops a stereotypic vascular pattern (top image). Systemic delivery of ALK1Fc caused a profound alteration of retinal vascular morphology (bottom image). Endothelial cell staining (green, isolectin-B4) revealed a dramatic increase in retinal vascular density, failed remodeling of the primary retinal capillary plexus into a mature vascular pattern, and defective arteriogenesis as indicated by the loss of smooth muscle actin (SMA, red).
