Fluorescence in situ hybridization of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in fibroblasts from a patient with Pearson syndrome. A green probe corresponding to the intact region of the mtDNA and a red probe corresponding to the deleted region of mtDNA are simultaneously hybridized. The image shows heterogeneity of signals in the population, reflecting heteroplasmy, and also reveals the striking example of a cell containing almost entirely deleted mtDNA.
