Expression and function of vitamin A metabolizing enzymes are increased in the intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes during graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Interrupting RAR signaling in T cells reduces Th1 differentiation and gut homing. The cover image shows murine GVHD small intestine stained with antibodies to retinaldehyde dehydrogenases 1 (RALDH1) (red), CD45 (blue), and CD11c (green), illustrating a region in which RALDH1 staining can be seen in non-hematopoietic cells.
