Hematoxylin and eosin–stained peripheral blood smear from Stat1−/− mice. Notice the expansion of myeloid cells indicating a myeloproliferative disease. Stat1−/− mice develop a myeloid hyperplasia as they age. Transplantation of bone marrow from diseased Stat1−/− mice provokes the outgrowth of an aggressive B-cell clone in recipient mice that is already detectable in the donor Stat1−/− mice.
