Changes in vasculature and proinflammatory mediators of pain in the dorsal skin of homozygous BERK mice expressing human sickle hemoglobin. A confocal Z-stack projection of the skin showing abnormal vasculature (CD31, bright green) with diminished vascular plexus and haphazardly oriented blood vessels. Intense punctate immunoreactivity of neuropeptides, substance P (SP, red), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP, blue), and co-staining of SP and CGRP (magenta) is seen throughout the epidermis and dermis.
