A human reticulocyte infected with Plasmodium cynomolgi, a malaria parasite of nonhuman primates (fixed thin-film preparation stained with Giemsa stain). The asexual P cynomolgi parasite shown is at the midtrophozoite stage (∼30 hours after red cell invasion) and is morphologically similar to its sister species, P vivax. While P cynomolgi infections do not show a specific red cell tropism in their normal hosts (Old World monkeys), human infections are restricted to CD71+/CD234+ reticulocytes.
