Three blood smears from a 3-year-old boy with acute malaria and G6PD deficiency. On day 0 (top), numerous red cells are parasitized by Plasmodium falciparum but are otherwise normal. Twenty-four hours after starting treatment with a combination of dapsone and chlorproguanil (middle), one sees a parasite in a severely contracted red cell. On day 3 (bottom), the parasites have been eliminated by the drug. However, one sees contracted red cells, spherocytes, and hemighosts: a picture typical of oxidative hemolysis.
