It is demonstrated that anemia per se can have a marked influence on the absorption of iron that is independent of the effects of alterations in the rate of erythropoiesis and the body iron content.

Evidence is presented which suggests that the effects of anemia, the rate of erythropoiesis and the body iron content on the absorptive mechanism for iron are, to some extent, additive.
