Nonmyeloablative conditioning with total lymphoid irradiation (TLI) and antithymocyte serum (ATS) protects mice against lethal graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).

The number of mice in each group was 10.

(A) Survival of mice conditioned with lethal total body irradiation (TBI) or TBI plus ATS and engrafted with allogeneic bone marrow (BM) or BM plus peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). TBI alone was lethal, and grafts containing PBMC resulted in death due to GVHD.

(B) Survival of mice conditioned with 4080 cGy of TLI and engrafted with BM or BM plus PBMC. TLI was nonmyeloablative, and TLI-conditioned mice showed some protection from lethal GVHD.

(C) Survival of mice conditioned with TLI plus ATS. All mice survived the conditioning and were protected from lethal GVHD.
