Figure 4. Heparanase promotes growth and metastasis of myeloma tumor cells in vivo. Control-transfected (Control) or heparanase-transfected cells (HPSE-1) were injected at a single site subcutaneously in SCID mice. At 9 weeks (A) or 7 weeks (B) after injection, animals were euthanized, the primary tumors harvested and weighed, and the femurs analyzed for metastasis by immunohistochemistry as shown in Figure 3A. Plots in panels A and B show the wet weight of the primary tumor from each mouse and whether or not that mouse had detectable metastases in the femur (○ = nonmetastatic; • = metastatic).
