Chelators (1 mM DP or 0.1 mM SIH) were included either during periods 4 and 5 (▵) or dissolved in the H2O used to lyse 59Fe-reticulocytes (•). Following incubations of 59Fe-reticulocytes with the chelators, radioactivity was measured in the media, and that value was added to that of the EtOH soluble fraction. This sum represents the total chelator-bound 59Fe. The data are expressed as the percentage of the total cellular radioactivity as it was after the membrane-associated radioiron was displaced by 56Fe-Tf (Figure 1, end of period 4).
