Spontaneous proliferation in HAM/TSP. / (A) This graph presents the percentage of proliferating cells of HAM-4 (whose histogram is shown in Figure 2) that was calculated as the following: % BrdU+CD8+ cells = [number of BrdU+CD8+ cells in R1 + number of BrdU+CD8+ cells in R2] / [number of total CD8+ cells in R1 + R2]. % BrdU+CD4+ cells = [number of BrdU+CD4+ cells in R1 + number of BrdU+CD4+ cells in R2] / [number of total CD4+ cells in R1 + R2]. (B) In vitro proliferation of CD4+ and CD8+ cells was quantified for 4 patients with HAM/TSP as shown in Figure 3A. This graph shows the mean percentage of proliferating cells in each subset for 4 patients. Error bars indicate SEM. As seen in individual patients, the combined data indicate a higher degree of proliferation in CD8+ cells than in CD4+ cells.
