*The normal neutrophil count of the people of African descent is lower than that in whites. Therefore, the ethnic background may explain a “lower” neutrophil count. However, this should not automatically be judged as neutropenia. The real inherited neutropenias are rare conditions.

†When infiltration is extensive or other cofactors such as inflammation occur, an indolent BM neoplasms may well lead to or contribute to BM failure with cytopenia.
