Microscopy was performed through the Axioscope 2 Plus microscope (Carl Zeiss, Gottingen, Germany), using a 20×/0.50 Plan Neofluar or a 63×/1.25 Plan Neofluar oil-immersion objective (Carl Zeiss), and the Eukitt mounting medium (Bio-Optica, Milan, Italy). Images were acquired by the Axiocam MRc camera (Carl Zeiss) and the Axiovision 4.5 software (Carl Zeiss).
