The endothelium is sequentially affected during GVHD. Initial endothelial damage is caused by the conditioning regimen. During the second phase, neovascularization and recruitment of inflammatory cells occur. During the later stages of GVHD, alloreactive T cells target the endothelium, and blood vessels are destroyed.
