Figure 5. Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine production correlates with survival of tumor-bearing Jα18KO mice adoptively transferred with type I NKT cells. BALB/c Jα18KO mice were inoculated with 107 NS0-V or NS0-CD1 tumors and on days 0, 10, and 20 received 2.5 × 105 electronically sorted type I NKT cells or sham intravenously. Splenocytes were collected 25 days later and cocultured with irradiated tumor cells for 2 days. The culture supernatants were tested for the indicated cytokines by ELISA. Each bar represents the cytokine production from individual mice (n = 6 from 2 independent experiments). No bar indicates that the cytokine was not detectable. The asterisk indicates a significant P value (< .025) as determined by the Kruskal-Wallis test for the comparisons made between the indicated groups.
