Values for BFU-E, CFU-GM, and CFU-MK are the mean numbers ± SEM of colonies per 105 marrow cells determined from triplicate cultures in each of the 8 mice studied of each genotype. The hematocrit (Hct) and peripheral blood platelet count (PB PLT) were determined by Coulter counting, the bone marrow (BM) pmn percentage by manual differential of cytospin preparations of flushed marrow cells, and the peripheral blood polymorphonuclear leukocyte count (PB PMN) determined by Coulter counting for total white count and from a manual differential count of PMNs. The variation in the pmn counts from that reported in Table 1 is likely due to the variation in animal husbandry in the 2 sets of experiments; because of the need to perform more detailed hematologic analyses, the mice for these experiments were transferred from the SPF unit to our laboratory prior to being euthanized.
