Splenomegaly was graded as follows: nonpalpable, 0; palpable to 10 cm below the costal margin, 1; and greater than 10 cm, 2. Disease duration was measured in years from the time of diagnosis.

This patient was asplenic at the time of diagnosis as assessed by computed axial tomography.
