Intensity of bands was evaluated from coomassie stained gels (n = 4) using Adobe Photoshop as described in supplemental Methods.

As the H-subunit in serum is hardly visible by Coomassie and therefore quantifications are not very accurate, quantification of Western blots was done using 10% H-subunit of liver ferritin as reference point (n = 3).
