*Several prototype galectins have been shown to form homodimers (gal-1, -2, and -13) in case of the tandem repeat galectins.
†The only chimera galectin known so far (ie, galectin-3) contains a proline- and glycine-rich C-terminal tail that can mediate oligomerization of the protein.
‡Splicing has been shown to occur in the linker region between the 2 carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs). For galectin-8 an additional splice variant has been described that results in truncation of the C-terminal CRD.
