Tests performed in all patients with idiopathic venous thromboembolism (VTE):
  • Clinical history

  • Thorough physical examination

  • Laboratory testing (CBC, AST, ALT, ALP, calcium, and urinalysis)

  • Chest x-ray

 
Additional tests performed in patients randomized to the extensive screening group:
  • Ultrasonography of the abdomen and pelvis

  • CT of the abdomen and pelvis

  • Gastroscopy or double contrast barium swallow

  • Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy followed by barium enema

  • Stool guaiac examination

  • Sputum cytology

  • Tumor markers (CEA, α-fetoprotein and CA-125)

  • For women, mammography and Pap smear

  • For males, transabdominal ultrasound examination of the prostate and PSA
