A-B-C summary tool to ensure a logical approach to determining stroke mechanism.

  • Is there a problem in the arteries, either large artery atherosclerotic disease such as carotid stenosis or small artery (lacunar) disease, or a more unusual cause such as arterial dissection or vasculitis?

  • Is there a problem in the blood, such as a hypercoagulable state or other hematologic cause of stroke?

  • Is there a cardiac source of embolism?
