Issues to consider in family testing of asymptomatic patients.

Identification of a genetic condition may:
  • Reduce the occurrence of venous thrombosis (VT) in a given family

  • Reduce the occurrence of VT in the general population

  • Help a family understand the disease their loved one is suffering

  • Improve the prescription of adequate VT prophylaxis in risk periods

  • Provide other health benefits such as:

  • Concurrent lipid and blood pressure screening

  • Opportunity for interventions for obesity and smoking

  • Limit ability to obtain health or life insurance

  • Cause undue psychological distress

  • Provide false reassurance to those testing negative (who probably do have a VT risk higher than the general population)
